Where there is a lot of money, there is no shortage of scams. Unfortunately 🙁
I don’t want to write about all the stories I have heard from clients or “professional” friends. I will give just two examples. A friend – let’s call her Annie – decided to make the papers of a kennel judge. She had to be an assistant during exhibitions for some time to achieve this. One of the instructions she got before the start of the event was to remind the judge that dog Y was winning before entering the ring of dogs of breed X.
Second example. I once went to perform therapy for a beautiful golden retriever who was lucky enough to find people who decided to fight for him instead of getting rid of him. This puppy was afraid of his own shadow. He was from a cage farm. In the garage, in cages, bitches of three different breeds were kept with puppies. Shit, cold, stench and darkness. Zero socialization. The “breeder” was a kennel judge from the Polish Kennel Club 🙁 It’s hard to believe. I will add that, of course, the guardians of the dog did not know before the purchase in what conditions their puppy grew up because a lovely gentleman was passing nearby, so he brought them the baby so that they did not have to go out of town. (The world is small, and as luck would have it, shortly after buying the puppy, they met a neighbour of the “breeder” who knew how a judge from the Kennel Club takes care of his beloved dogs.)
Such delivery of puppies is a common trick. Be aware and remember: if you can’t check the conditions in which the puppies grow up, choose another breeder. It’s not only about your pooch’s mental health but also about forcing breeders to set higher standards. Suppose buyers decide not to buy puppies due to poor living conditions, lack of socialization, poor quality food, overbreeding, inbreeding, treating the bitch like a factory (litter with each heat), etc. In that case, breeders will have to change their approach. This is the only way to fix the situation.
The nightmare of breeding is not only the dramatic living situation of dog mothers and their children. It’s not just cold, hunger, cheap food, or leftovers from the human table that translate, for example, into later diseases of the joints or digestive system.
The nightmare of breeding is also, or above all, programmatic deformations of the appearance and character of dogs. We have transformed many races into their caricatures. We have changed the formerly fit dogs into disabled creatures unfit for any work.
Bellies almost touching the ground in dachshunds or basset dogs (i.e. hunting breeds!) are unlikely to make running easier.
Incredibly shortened muzzles of bulldogs or boxers lead to breathing problems and cerebral hypoxia, causing fainting, increasing the risk of strokes and preventing greater physical exertion.
Pug skulls are flattened to such an extent that many develop eyeball loss, and charmingly curled tails cause spinal degeneration.
We gave German shepherds and Labradors hip dysplasia; bassets diseases of joints, spine, eyes, and ears; we have enlarged the efficient and durable St. Bernards so that they barely move; Shar Pei got skin diseases from us; the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a skull so deformed that it is no longer sufficient for the brain, which causes many individuals to suffer from unimaginably severe headaches, etc., etc.
AND WHAT IS ALL THIS FOR? WHY? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS?
More and more often, I conclude that human stupidity, thoughtlessness, greed and cruelty have no limits 🙁
